Securing your first internship is a major milestone. It’s not just a Q3 Career Development requirement but a launchpad for your future success. For many students, it’s a chance to apply classroom knowledge beyond the scope of regular employment. Internships offer opportunities to build professional networks and gain invaluable experience. With so much potential, knowing where to start can be overwhelming. This guide will share how to maximize your internship experience at Golisano Institute for Business & Entrepreneurship, equipping you with practical tips and real-world insights to make the most of every moment.
Advocate for Yourself
You know your goals and aspirations better than anyone. While it’s beneficial to be open to new experiences, focus your efforts on gaining experience that aligns with your career aspirations. I made sure to talk with my Career Development professor about my skills and interests, which led to an introduction to a marketing expert and, ultimately, a transformative internship. Even if you can’t find an internship in your exact field, look for opportunities that build the skills you think you’ll need to be successful in that area.
Network Strategically
At Golisano Institute for Business & Entrepreneurship, every student receives personal business cards at orientation, setting the expectation that they will be used frequently for networking. During your internship, introduce yourself, ask questions, and learn about the job and its requirements. Networking within the organization, and beyond your assigned team, can lead to future opportunities as you grow in your career. Beyond the network you’ll build during academic time, meeting local decision-makers and industry leaders is crucial. For example, during my internship with SRG Management Firm, I connected with the company’s founder and other digital marketing professionals, gaining valuable insights and tips.
Do Your Research
Research the specific role you may want to pursue, explore local companies in your field of interest and make the choice that seems like it would be the best fit for you. For me, commute time was a crucial factor, so I chose an internship location that suited my location and schedule. Before starting, make sure you have a basic understanding of the role and company. Look for online reviews from past interns and insights into the company’s culture and recent developments. Investing time upfront can ensure the experience aligns with your goals and helps you develop necessary skills.
Give It Your All
Make every moment of your internship count. Approach each task with dedication and confidence, even if it feels intimidating. Employers expect you to want to learn on the job, so embrace challenges and seek hands-on experience whenever you can. Your commitment to excellence and initiative will get you noticed, setting you apart from others. During my internship, my dedication led to valuable connections and even invitations to work on exciting new projects.
Enjoy the Ride
Lastly, have fun! Internships are opportunities to grow, learn, and explore your passions. Step out of your comfort zone, ask questions, and embrace every experience. Celebrate your achievements and enjoy the journey. Your internship could be the start of an incredible career path. Put your best foot forward and make the most of this amazing experience. Golisano Institute of Business & Entrepreneurship is here to support you every step of the way.
