On Thursday, March 30, we had the opportunity to share with 52 High School counselors from 29 schools across Monroe, Ontario, Steuben, Wyoming and Genesee counties and the City of Rochester a new approach to business education.

Many people have asked, why does Rochester need another institute or another form of education? The answer is quite simple. One of the things that we’ve learned over the course of the pandemic is that a one-size-fits-all approach to education and professional training is not sufficient given the diversity of interests and talents and needs that our community has.

Golisano Institute for Business & Entrepreneurship is an alternative post-secondary education focused on providing a foundation and empowering individuals to become entrepreneurial-minded owners of their personal success.

“The Golisano Institute for Business and Entrepreneurship leadership team thoroughly outlined their mission and aspirations for their cutting-edge school which is designed to help students become business-world ready,” said John Serafine, Director of Student Counseling and & College Advising at McQuaid Jesuit High School. “The large turnout of area high school counselors was evidence of the growing interest and desire to provide our diverse set of students with a wide array of educational opportunities. This new program will serve our students and community well.”

The issue of keeping talent and growing talent in Rochester is a challenge,” said Bob Duffy, Chief Executive Officer at Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce. “This is a phenomenal opportunity and a great option for students.” He continued saying, “with the way it is structured and the thoughtful approach to scheduling, individuals will come out of the Institute prepared to start a business or take their career to a higher level.”

“As a high school counselor, I am excited to learn about all that the Golisano Institute of Business and Entrepreneurship offers,” commented Marty Buddendeck, High School Counselor at Fairport High School. “This is ideal for that student who is self-motivated, desires a successful career in business, and is eager to focus on those classes that will bring them success in a more efficient and timely manner. The mentorship gained from the weekly guest speakers is priceless and something that cannot be found in many traditional four-year institutions. I am impressed with every aspect of this, from the course offerings, the quality of instructors, the living accommodations available, and most of all, the small cost for this huge return of investment.”

It’s a really great opportunity,” Dan Burns, Regional President of M&T, said about the integration with businesses and the importance of work-ready employees. “Students get a curriculum and embedded business experience that meets and checks all the boxes of what employers are looking for.”
